Living in Cheltenham, I have been working in mixed media since 2013, creating paintings on canvas and paper. But I also make what I call handmade, "Artist Journals" from old books...
As an ‘outsider’ (think non-academic) artist, I’ve avoided formal qualifications – instead developing my own processes - which include: acrylic paints, 'gelli' prints, handmade stamps, collage and mark making.
I love playing with my art supplies, for two reasons: (1.) As a form of relaxation, or mindfulness, and (2.) As a way to ‘self soothe’ in stressful times...
I first came into this whole mindfulness practice as a yoga teacher, but I discovered you don't have to be moving the body to gain this calming effect. I like to think of my studio sessions as 'arty experiments' where I test out supplies, techniques and themes.
I like to play with a sense of the barriers between internal and external energy. My figures fill the edges of the painting, while the backgrounds fill the figures. My aim is to paint the feeling of spaciousness and calm.
I have exhibited my work in many local retail spaces over the years, and feel it is important to support community business. Currently, I have paintings in the following shops:
This year I am launching a short workshop at the Saska Cafe in Beaumaris, where I will guide participants in my process as a way of self calming and relaxation.
Thank you for supporting my work!
